Simon “I’m on it” Hutton bought Tillers Turf in 2012 having been an enthusiastic customer for many years. Often mistaken for a human dynamo he has been known to send emails at 3am on his way to work with his tireless companion, Twiglet.
You’ll recognise Simon by the designer sunglasses perched on top of his head, rain or shine, inside or out, probably in readiness for his next visit to Portugal.
Simon’s experience as a sportsturf contractor has endowed him with invaluable contacts in the world of football, golf and landscaping. He brings a unique and innovative approach to turf growing to ensure that the company continues to stay at the forefront of the industry for the next 25 years.
Customer Service and Sales Manager
Rachel runs the sales office from our turf production unit at Springwood Farm, Thorney, Lincolnshire. She is responsible for providing a first-class service to our customers, ensuring that they get the best quality turf for the purpose, delivered on time, and at the right price. Her calm, unflappable nature is one of her great assets, when the pressure builds at peak periods.
With the notable exception of spiders Rachel is very fond of animals – in fact she is a big softie who enjoys nothing more than spending time walking her dogs. And, whether it’s on mountain bike or horse, Rachel loves riding in the open air through the Lincolnshire Wolds.
The serene idyll of the turf nursery is regularly interrupted by the startling sight of pink wellies as Rachel checks stocks for quality. We have little need for additional bird scarers at Tillers Turf.
Annette’s roots are firmly in agricultural finance, and she’s responsible for the monitoring and analysis of all production costs. She has also taken on a wider role with us to include H&S, HR, and support for the production managers.
She adores her two dogs, Archie and Pip, and the three of them enjoy taking the husband for a walk in the woods at the weekend.
Annette loves life Down-Under, but her dream is to live in Malta either when she retires or next week when her lottery numbers come up.
She is an ardent follower of English cricket, which might explain why Test Match Special occasionally replaces Steve Wright in the Afternoon on the office airwaves.
Alan has been with us for more years than he cares to remember. His experience and knowledge of growing turf is legendary and we rely heavily on his dedication and commitment. Leading a production team of 20 Alan oversees all operations in the turf growing cycle including cultivation, sowing, spraying, fertilising and irrigation to name but a few.
He is married to Val and has two grown-up sons. His youthful good looks belie the fact that he has recently become a granddad.
What little spare time Alan has away from the farm he spends with the family or mowing his lawn (busman’s holiday?)
The son every mother would love to have, Joe has melted all the female hearts in the office and won the respect of his production staff. His upbringing on the family farm, hands-on experience in the sportsturf construction industry, together with a degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management from Harper Adams, has given him the skills and confidence to tackle any job on the farm.
Joe works alongside Alan overseeing the day-to-day management of the production team. In addition, he fosters relationships with local landowners and is responsible for negotiating new cropping licenses and irrigation allowances.
The local rabbit population has taken a dive since Joe’s arrival thanks to his prowess with a shotgun, honed on the clay shooting range. When he gets a chance, though, he enjoys watching rugby.
Golf and Technical Manager
Richard joined us after 20 years as a Course Manager at Boston West Golf Club. Earlier in his career he spent 18 months as a caddy on the European Tour visiting many of Europe’s finest courses.
He’s passionate about promoting biodiversity on golf courses and won the coveted STRI “Conservation Greenkeeper of the Year Award” in 2014 at his first attempt. He’s a nature lover (naturist?) and assures us that it’s his binoculars that we can see in his pocket…
Richard joined us to supervise the production of our highly specialist products including turf for golf greens and wildflower turf.
Away from work Richard is married to Rachel and has two teenage daughters called Georgia and Lottie. In his spare time he is an RSPB volunteer, in addition to educating school children about nature and the environment.
He loves playing golf, and modestly describes his handicap of 6 as “rubbish”.
Anthony "Ant" Darker
Specialist Turf Manager
He runs marathons. He runs the kids around. He runs after his wife, Sarah. He runs machinery. He runs our specialist turf unit.
Towards the end of the day Ant takes Bradley, the dog, for a run and puts the chickens to bed before setting out on a training run. Ant relies on a head-torch to squeeze as much running into his day as possible.
When he’s not running he’s winning. As Operation Pollinator 2015 winner, and STRI Conservation Greenkeeper of the Year 2016, Ant is well-placed to win orders for our growing portfolio of wildflower turf.
Ant’s great work ethic and eye for detail will make a big contribution to Tillers Turf in the years to come.
Customer Service Assistant
Maria is part of the team in our busy office, preparing quotations and liaising with customers. As a mum with twin girls and a son, she has recently ventured back to the world of work. Lucky for us because she’s popular, professional and a pleasure to have around.
Picture a Swedish model in your mind….. that’s Maria! Born in Sweden she met her future husband, Richard, whilst indulging her passion for skiing. The ties run deep here – Richard runs a fleet of lorries to deliver our turf. Maria has her HGV licence, so it’s always possible that she’ll be behind the wheel on your next delivery. To greet her just say “god morgon”.
Depot Manager, Bagshot
A former squaddie Craig swapped his fatigues for a harness and trained as a tree surgeon. He decided to come down to earth when he discovered a love for lawns, and spent four years mowing, scarifying, aerating and edging on a private 500 acre estate in Surrey.
Craig has been the Tillers Turf Depot Manager at Bagshot since 2013, a role he enjoys. His success at the job is down to his “can do” attitude, and to the outstanding service he gives to his landscaper customers.
With a new wife and a young son both wanting attention, not to mention renovating his house inside and out, Craig knows what it’s like to be busy. To relax he digs out his old harness and goes rock climbing.
Orders and Logistics Administrator
Jenny is our newest recruit and is part of the busy sales team at Springwood Farm. Her friendly, enthusiastic voice will be the first thing you hear when you call Tillers. Jenny will take your harvest order, arrange haulage and ensure your turf is delivered on time and in tip top condition!
Alongside Danielle, there is now another equestrian in the office…Jenny owns 2 horses called Elle and Bally. Jenny loves a challenge, is very competitive and loves nothing more than taking part in cross country events and squeezing in ‘chill time’ with her horses on leisurely hacks.
Jenny also has a pet pooch called Lulu, a Jack Russell, her little ‘fur baby’ who she enjoys taking for walks during the warm Summer months. Being a sun-worshipper she’s a big fan of striking up the barbie and dreams of lazy days lounging by an exotic pool!! The Tillers phone rings again…OK Jenny back to reality.
We are so pleased to have her on board and with her happy go lucky positive attitude she’s been a real find!
